What Will You Be Attending in 2010?

Hello folks,

On the Pioneer Team, we’re thinking about our travel plans for 2010.  A lot of our travel is related to specific grants and projects, but we have a budget for meetings and conferences.  We’re building a list of events we might attend.  What we’re looking for are meetings and conferences where we might meet interesting and innovative people, find unconventional and future-oriented ideas.

To prime the pump, I asked a couple folks for their ideas.

From Susannah Fox at the Pew Internet & American Life Project:

From Vijay Goel, Sr. Director, Healthcare Prize Development at X PRIZE Foundation:

From Jim Cashel, Chairman, Forum One Communication

Pulse + Signal Blogger Andre Blackman keeps a list of upcoming events here:

Other events we’re aware of include:

We will compile all the submissions, add web links and share the results with everybody.

I would add the Grants Managers Network annual conference to the list: http://www.gmnetwork.org/annual-conference/2010/home. The conference agenda is pushing some interesting ideas including greening grantmaking processes, streamlining grantmaking practices, and foundation use of social media.

The conference will take place in Baltimore, March 15-17.

Those looking for new science to inform health policy should attend AcademyHealth’s two conferences in 2010: the National Health Policy Conference, Feb. 8-9 in Washington, D.C., and the Annual Research Meeting, June 27-29 in Boston.

Conference details are available at:

The Smart Start National Conference online Feb. 18! This early education conference is going virtual for the first time, making it easier to access. Speakers include national and state leaders including Joan Lombardi Deputy Assistant Secretary, Administration for Children and Families U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Lombardi’s presentation will be followed by presentations on the key topics that our federal partners are "studying" as they gear up for helping states implement the challenge fund. These include:

•Data,
•Quality measures,
•Family engagement , and
•Professional development.

Each presentation will feature a national expert and local and state leaders who have demonstrated promising practices in each of these areas.

Other conferences folks might want to look into are on the global side. We are beginning to see some more obvious areas of overlap b/t global and domestic health. These global confs are generally more focused on primary care and cutting edge robust technologies (think mHealth; animation; low cost medical devices) that could inform the domestic side. Also, the 2nd conf below is much more affordable:

1. Global Health Council, DC June 2010

2. Global Health & Innovation, Unite for Sight

One more thought, keep an eye on the mHealth Summit, DC, Fall 2010:

I second Adin Miller's suggestion. My colleagues and I have attended the GNN conference for the last four years and I think it's a must for any grantmaking professional. There are a number of great sessions around best practices in grants management, legal/compliance topics and technology/streamlining.

Also just came across a new social investing meeting: ReVisioning Value 2010: A Conference at the Intersection of Purpose and Profit

Upcoming conference about cutting edge innovations and research in sexual health, technology and youth:

Sex::Tech 2010
February 26th-27th in San Francisco
www.sextech.org
Hosted by ISIS, Inc.

Nice. I want to take part.
